Meatless Mondays
Whatever your reason for abstaining from meat every once in a while, (or all the time, for our vegetarian and vegan friends), the concept of Meatless Monday is a wise idea. If only for the health of it, abstaining from meat one night per week allows for increased variety of foods served, therefore improving nutrient intake – that is if the meat is replaced with some decent choices. Meatless Monday also involves some creativity and fun – two characteristics many of us could stand to have in the kitchen. Besides, even pork loving Mario Batali is doing it!
Pesticide – ADHD Link?
File under “scary news of the week.” A study in the latest issue of Pediatrics examined the connection between Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and exposure to pesticides from produce. As with the majority of other studies in nutrition, this one shows a relationship only, not cause and effect. And as is typically the case, more studies are needed to fully examine this issue. It’s important to note that the types of produce cited in the research included celery, strawberries and frozen blueberries. In the meantime, this is likely to have many parents thinking twice about their produce purchases.
